According to Merriam Webster, the definition of goose is:
any of numerous wild or domesticated, web-footed swimming birds of the family Anatidae, especially of the genera Anser and Branta, most of which are larger and have a longer neck and legs than ducks;
or the female of the bird whose male is called a gander.
There is a house in our neighborhood that we drive past to get to and from Jacob's school that has a goose statue in residence in the front yard. This goose changes clothes according to the seasons, holidays and weather. She was a pilgrim for Thanksgiving, had a mask and beads for Mardi Gras, wore a beautiful Easter dress, a sombrero and cape for Cinco de Mayo and she has many other outfits. Fortunately, we have had a little rain this past week, so today when we drove by, she was ready for the weather in her yellow slicker and matching hat. We have decided that it is a goose and not a gander, after all, how many males would have a wardrobe that is so extensive?
We have lived here almost a year and it has become a contest for Jacob and I (and occasionally the older boys) to see who can spot the goose first to see if her outfit has changed. In fact, Jacob tries to spy her way before we even turn on the street. It's all about the competition.
At first we just chuckled at the idea of a goose changing outfits with the season, but it has become something we look forward to each time we drive by. This little goose has goosed up something so mundane as coming home from school. What? You didn't know that definition of the word goose? It can also mean to strengthen or improve. You can learn something every day.
