The Sam Houston Memorial Museum

Fourth graders spend the whole year studying Texas History, so it is natural for them to tie their field trip to that study and I had the privilege of tagging along. We went to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville, Texas.
As they were seated on the steps of the Steamboat House where Sam Houston died of pneumonia, Andrew's class learned many interesting facts about Sam Houston.
Here are just a few:
*He lived among the Cherokee people for a while and they called him "The Raven."
*Sam Houston is the only person in to have been the governor of two different states, Tennessee and Texas.
*He only had about 6 months of formal schooling.
*He refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Confederate States of America and was deposed as governor of Texas.
We visited a replica of Sam Houston's kitchen.  The original burned to the ground.  The tour guide demonstrated how food was prepared and even popped popcorn for everyone over the coals.

There was also a demonstration of the use of outdoor tools such as axes and guns.  They even fired a powder packed rifle.
It was a beautiful day and we all learned a lot about the history of our great state!
