We got up bright and early this morning and said goodbye to Estes Park to head for New Mexico on our way home.
To break up the drive, we decided to see what interesting things there were to see along the drive to New Mexico. Using the app from Roadside America, we found Bishop Castle not too far off Interstate 25 South.
The short explanation is that this is a castle that has been built over the last 40 year by hand by one paranoid, conspiracy theory believing man. It is a monumental project that is still in the works. We spent a few minutes touring the castle, but decided that most of it is not built to code and it wasn't worth a trip to the hospital. While it was interesting to see, Bishop Castle can now be added to our list of places we don't ever have to visit again.
We finished off our day in Roswell, New Mexico, home of the alleged UFO crash site. As we found in the Roadside America app, Roswell has embraced their alien history. The McDonald's is even shaped like a UFO.
We took a trip down Main Street where the street posts are topped with alien faces and there are alien totem poles just waiting to have their picture taken. The boys had fun pointing out their many alien sightings.
As a voracious reader, my absolute favorite Roadside America stop was at the Tree of Knowledge at the Roswell Public Library. This picture does not really do it justice, but it is a wonderful tribute to literature and words in general. The leaves have words sculpted out of metal inside their frames.
The trunk is made of tiles that have quotes from books and titles of books from past and current authors. It was fun to find Harry Potter, Little Women, The Scarlet Letter and more listed there.
For me, it was such a feel good tribute to authors and readers alike.
