11/11/11 - Veteran's Day

11/11/11 is a special day for more than the obvious reason of being a catchy date.  It is also Veteran's Day this year.  My dad is celebrating a reunion with some of his Marine Corps buddies this weekend.  They all attended the Veteran's Day parade downtown this morning, so we decided to join them.
The boys and I made a poster for him with a picture of him wearing his uniform on it.  Sophie came too, so all four of the grandkids were there to celebrate!   I didn't get a picture, but she has a really cute onesie that says, "My Papaw may be a big, tough Marine, but I have him wrapped around my little finger!"

I took way too many pictures to post, but there were many different participants in the parade, such as several high school bands, and JrROTC programs, the fire department, and veteran's groups,
 old time cars,
Historic military vehicles that have been restored
This cool airplane car
and Santa even showed up in a purple suit to honor those veterans, like my dad, who were awarded the Purple Heart.
There were quite a number of parade participants that shook hands and thanked the veteran's for their service.  Given that my dad served in the Vietnam War, he didn't exactly receive a hero's welcome from citizen's in general when he returned home.  It is touching to see that he is receiving that much deserved recognition now.  He truly appreciates it.  It was an honor to be there to support him.
