We spent the Fourth of July at the ranch with Mimi and G-daddy and my nephew, Ben.
This year we have had a little more rain there, so there are an abundance of golden garden spiders. Click here if you want to learn more about them.
Matthew's keen eyes spotted this egg sac hanging on the side of the barn. I wonder how many spiderlings she's expecting?
Along with an abundance of spiders, there come an over population of grasshoppers. Andrew, Ben and Matthew spent quite a while capturing grasshoppers and throwing them in the webs to see the spiders wrap and eat them. Kind of disgusting, I know, but it is a good science lesson.
While hunting for grasshoppers, Andrew spotted a giant Walking Stick insect. It was fascinating to watch it move. No, we did not feed it to the spiders.
They made "fire crackers" by dipping marshmallows in colored white chocolate and then rolling them in sprinkles.
It's a tasty treat and a cute table decoration too!
They even made a festive cake.
The fun and festive day was topped off with a few low flying fireworks. It was a little to windy and dry for our comfort, but the boys had a blast with the sparklers.
