San Jacinto Day

As I have mentioned before, fourth grade is when students in Texas begin intensive  learning about Texas history.  Well, today is San Jacinto Day.  What is San Jacinto Day you ask?

On April 21, 1836, the Battle of San Jacinto was fought between the Texas Army and Mexican soldiers.  It was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution.  Led by General Sam Houston, the Texas Army engaged and defeated the Mexican forces led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in a fight that lasted just eighteen minutes. About 630 of the Mexican soldiers were killed and 730 captured, while only 9 Texans died.

Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, was captured the following day and held as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country.

To celebrate San Jacinto Day, the fourth graders at Andrew's school had cupcakes at lunch.  I volunteered to make them.  He and I had fun coming up with an appropriate design:

Any excuse to have cupcakes sounds good to me!  :)
